It doesn’t matter what kind of job you do, whether you spend your day typing on a keyboard, waiting tables or loading big pallets onto trucks; those joints and muscles are going to ache from time to time! You need a soothing, workaday marijuana lotion recipe that can be used everyday, during the workday or after, that’s rich in cannabis and other soothing and pain relieving herbs. And you need a cannabis lotion without undesirable qualities you don’t want like “feeling high” or smelling like Justin Beiber – this lotion has no psychoactive effects. It is for everyone in the legal marijuana states that have to bust-a-move 5 days a week or more!

Tulsi essential oil & Boswellia Serrata 5-Loxin extract are the special ingredients in this hard working marijuana lotion!
There are two ingredients that make this marijuana lotion very effective: Boswellia Serrata extract (usually called 5-Loxin) which can be taken orally or used topically. Boswellia Serrata is also known as Indian Frankincense and comes from the same family of trees as the frankincense of the middle east. I use the powdered 5-Loxin capsules and measure out about a gram from there to make this recipe. The powder from the capsules will look and smell like frankincense and will melt perfectly into the oil during the warming process. The other special ingredient here is Tulsi essential oil. Tulsi, otherwise known as Holy Basil is a soothing and antimicrobial, another reason I love to have this lotion or lotion bars made with it handy during the workday! Tulsi is also relaxing to the muscles, helping to prevent strains and sprains. Combined with cannabis, these two herbs make a great pain relieving and pain prevention lotion that you can use every day. (Thanks to Organic India for sending us this sample of Tulsi essential oil to share with you in this new recipe – to buy visit their site at www.organicindia.com.)
This lotion contains water, and no preservatives, so it does need to be kept refrigerated and should not be left out of refrigeration for more than a few hours. If you’d like the portable lotion bar version of this recipe, you’ll have to join the mailing list! Lotion bars are 100% fats and waxes which makes them shelf-stable and great for carrying in your handbag to work.
Check out my new book, The Cannabis Spa at Home, you’re already familiar with the why and the how and also the ingredients I use for emulsifying lotions. No beeswax & borax or emulsifying waxes, I use pure plant medicine to create lovely and fully emulsified lotions that do not separate after refrigeration.
The Workaday Marijuana Lotion Recipe
You will need:
1 – 2 grams of Simpson oil (available at your local dispensary or caregiver) OR 1 -2 grams light or blonde hashish or keif (as shown)
(Simpson oil has a darker color and is more appropriate for after-work lotions. I prefer using light or blonde keif in almost all of my lotions, especially the ones I put on before going into public. Light or blonde keif will have a mild fragrance that doesn’t barge into the room–one that balances well with everything else in this recipe.)
2 grams of sunflower lecithin (The sticky kind, not the dry kind – pre-filled capsules are ok for this.)
2/3 cup mango seed butter
1/3 cup olive oil (If you would like to make this lotion from something other than Simpson oil, like cannabis trim or flowers, my book, The Cannabis Spa at Home, contains a recipe for this called “Cannabis Foundation Oil.” Prepare this foundation oil and substitute 1/3 of a cup of it for the 1/3 of a cup of plain olive oil called for here.)
800 mg – 1 gram of powdered 5-Loxin or other powdered Boswellia Serrata extract
10 drops of tulsi essential oil
3 drops of cinnamon essential oil
3 drops of sweet orange essential oil
1 fresh aloe vera leaf, scraped of 2 tbsp. of gel (This will be chunky.) Aloe is part of the emulsification process and needs to be fresh, not bottled for best results in this lotion recipe.
3/4 cup orange flower water
2 tsp fresh lemon juice
Preparation:
1. In a blender add the orange flower water, aloe vera, and lemon juice and blend until smooth and no aloe “chunks” remain. Pour this into a pan on the stove. Heat this to 140 – 200 degrees or the low setting on your burner. This will kill any bacteria that has been introduced and prepare this water-based liquid for emulsification with the fats.
2. In a second pan, add the mango seed butter, olive oil (or the “foundation oil”), sunflower lecithin, Simpson oil and the powdered 5-Loxin or Boswellia Serrata extract powder. Melt these together at about 140 – 200 degrees or the low setting on your burner. This is a very gentle melting process, don’t let the oil bubble or burn. Stir frequently until all ingredients are melted together. Remove from the burner after this has melted and add all of the essential oils.
3. Slowly add the warm fats to the hot liquid in the first pan and vigorously whisk or use a hand blender, your burners should be shut off at this point. You may transfer to a stand mixer or continue to whisk everything together for 3 – 5 minutes. At this point, I will transfer this to a new pan and put in in the refrigerator to firm up just a little, say 20 minutes or so, and then take it back out again and whip it up really creamy before putting in a glass lotion bottle for storage in the refrigerator.
This lotion sets up as thick as a typical hand lotion, but not as thick as a cold cream. Shake it just a little each time you use it from the refrigerator for best results. My favorite time to use it is just after I make a new batch and before it makes a final destination to the refrigerator! Enjoy!
